Outpatient Joint Replacement

Outpatient Joint ReplacementPatients who need a hip or knee replacement may be able to have surgery without spending a night in the hospital if they qualify for outpatient joint replacement, also known as rapid recovery. To be considered for outpatient joint replacement, patients must receive:

  • A recommendation from their orthopedic surgeon
  • A thorough exam and health history through the PACE Clinic
  • An at-home needs assessment for post-surgery physical therapy

Results are then evaluated to determine if this approach is the best option. Only patients with minimal risk of complications will be considered.

Benefits of Outpatient Joint Replacement

  • Reduced post-surgery pain
  • Rapid return to the comforts of home
  • Quicker recovery and return to regular activities

Surgery and Recovery
The orthopedic surgeon uses a minimally invasive joint replacement technique for quicker recovery and return to mobility. After the procedure, physicians and nurses closely monitor each patient's pain level and overall well-being. Patients and caregivers receive special instructions to help them prepare for care at home.

All recovery goals must be achieved before discharge. Patients experiencing any pain-control issues or other problems with recovery are kept overnight and re-evaluated the following day.

Assistance from the Nurse Navigator
The Orthopedic Hospital's nurse navigator:

  • Contacts patients before and after surgery to answer questions
  • Meets with patients and their families to discuss discharge instructions
  • Calls patients after surgery to discuss progress and make sure recovery is on track
